{"id":4037,"date":"2018-04-28T00:12:20","date_gmt":"2018-04-28T00:12:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newpromisefarms.com\/?page_id=4037"},"modified":"2022-02-12T01:27:26","modified_gmt":"2022-02-12T01:27:26","slug":"no-frills-2018","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/newpromisefarms.com\/?page_id=4037","title":{"rendered":"No Frills 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many many years ago, I rode a No Frills ride and yes, it was definitely No Frills.\u00a0 We got one bowl of soup for dinner.\u00a0 No crackers, no bread, no dessert.\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 And, my horse found a rock, at the peak of the big loop, so I had to hand walk him back to the camp, which was about 8 miles.\u00a0 Yeah. And, they lost my hold bag after the ride.\u00a0 In that bag was over $100 of tack, not to mention all the other things.\u00a0 So, I made up my mind never to do a No Frills ride again.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then, two years ago, Lindsey talked me into the No Frills ride.\u00a0 She was riding on Steel.\u00a0 In that away hold, which is small and cramped and on a hill, Steel kicked a rider in the leg and caused her an injury. Then, one mile from the finish, Steel caught some karma and banged her leg on something.\u00a0 When we got into the finish, her leg was bleeding, swollen and was off so she didn&#8217;t get a completion.\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 I made up my mind never to do a No Frills ride again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This year is not starting well.\u00a0 Rabbit Run Endurance and Bunny Hop CTR both cancelled due to snow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I was going to do the Chesapeake CTR, but my truck blew up and I could not find a ride for me and Penny Pony.\u00a0 I even thought about stealing my neighbor&#8217;s truck in the middle of the night to go to the ride.\u00a0 As it turns out, they had the nicest weather at that ride.\u00a0 And I missed it.<\/p>\n<p>Dang.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I buried my old truck and bought a new truck.\u00a0 Everything about it is awesome.\u00a0 I am itching to ride, and itching to take my new truck on a trip so I decided that I would bite the bullet and attend my &#8220;hated&#8221; ride, The Foxcatcher.\u00a0 (NOTE:\u00a0 To date, Foxcatcher 5, Dodie 0)\u00a0 However, coming into the ride date, the weathermen were predicting a 6+ inch snow storm on the day of the ride.\u00a0 Okay, riding in the snow can be cool, but getting out of the Foxcatcher fields the day after might not be so easy.\u00a0 AND, I have had very bad luck on that course when it&#8217;s just wet from rain, I could not imagine how it would be with snow covering.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I spit the bullet out and chose not to go. And again, they had the nicest weather ever.\u00a0 The snow all passed south of us and at the ride the sun was shining and it was a crisp 55 degrees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Freakin&#8217; weather men.<\/p>\n<p>Next ride available?\u00a0 No Frills. OH NO NO NO NO NO<\/p>\n<p>gawd<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Okay.\u00a0 I sent in my entry and asked around for someone to ride with me.\u00a0 Sonja, having no clue that she would now be the highlight of my ride story, chose to ride with me.\u00a0 (Thank you, Sonja!) We had some conversations about my ride strategy, which mostly involves looking at the scenery and letting Penny Pony pick a pace that doesn&#8217;t kill her.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then Cindy and I had conversation and she said she would &#8220;wingman&#8221; me down there.\u00a0 YAY!\u00a0 Although I&#8217;ll be alone in my truck, I won&#8217;t be alone on the highway.<\/p>\n<p>Trip down had no excitement.\u00a0 Other than my bladder telling me I really needed to pull over and empty it.<\/p>\n<p>grin<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4038\" src=\"http:\/\/newpromisefarms.com\/files\/2018\/04\/camping-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>We arrive and promptly steal the spot that Tia was saving for Sonja.\u00a0 (We didn&#8217;t know, so sorry) When Sonja arrived, she parked next to me so Blossom and Penny Pony could make faces at each other all night.\u00a0 (It was too funny!)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And camp setup quickly, even though it was a wind tunnel where we were parked. It was bright and sunny and windy.\u00a0 I got chapped cheeks.<\/p>\n<p>Owie<\/p>\n<p>It was supposed to get pretty cold at night, but the ride day temps were predicted to be 64 and sunny.\u00a0 NO WIND.<\/p>\n<p>I woke up and threw back the covers.<\/p>\n<p>BRRRRRRRR<\/p>\n<p>Okay, let me stay under these covers a bit longer.\u00a0 It is cold.\u00a0 My phone said 23 degrees.\u00a0 I started my truck and climbed in to warm up and it said 22 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>BRRRRRRRR<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reminds me of last year at Blackwater Swamp Stomp.\u00a0 Wake up temp there was 18 degrees. (<a href=\"http:\/\/newpromisefarms.com\/?page_id=3241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">That&#8217;s the ride I tried to kill myself with a Buddy Heater. LOL<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I layered up some clothing and get going with my horsie chores.\u00a0 Sonja wasn&#8217;t up yet so Penny Pony was eating her mash and telling Blossom, &#8220;Na na na na na&#8221; Cindy was getting ready to go on the 50 mile ride and I knew that Penny Pony was going to get mad as hell when Bailey left.<\/p>\n<p>Oh yeah, let the airs above ground begin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, for an hour and a half, until we started getting ready to go out on the 30 mile ride, Penny Pony was doing her Lippazaner impressions in her corral.\u00a0 Several people stopped to ask what was wrong with her.\u00a0 I smiled and said, &#8220;Nothing, she&#8217;s doing morning yoga.&#8221; Two people said straight up that they wouldn&#8217;t get on her to ride.\u00a0 I smiled and said, &#8220;Oh, when the saddle goes on, she&#8217;s all business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Why yes, yes she is a basket case before we go out.\u00a0 Why yes, yes she is a monster under saddle and has never..not once..given a buck or a rear or a spook.\u00a0 once I hit that saddle, she is all business.\u00a0 ALL BUSINESS!<\/p>\n<p>Even Sonja gave me the wide eye look after watching Penny Pony in her corral.<\/p>\n<p>Then we tack up and get on.<\/p>\n<p>HERE WE GO!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We left camp after all the other riders were out.\u00a0 We left camp at a walk.\u00a0 We walked the first mile.\u00a0 We trotted and caught up to a rider, then passed him on the single track.\u00a0 I told Sonja, &#8220;Now, we start walking up the ranks.\u00a0 Hang on!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4045\" src=\"http:\/\/newpromisefarms.com\/files\/2018\/04\/coming-out-of-hold-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>And we did.\u00a0 By the time we reached the 9 mile 10 minute trot out, we had passed 12 riders.\u00a0 So far, Blossom was doing fine with Penny&#8217;s pace.\u00a0 They both ate and drank a little then we hit the real trail.\u00a0 This photo is us leaving from the 10 minute hold.\u00a0 Penny didn&#8217;t really wake up until we had that little break.\u00a0 Now Sonja and Blossom are going to feel the burn!\u00a0 Penny Pony was looking 30 miles down trail the entire time.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4042\" src=\"http:\/\/newpromisefarms.com\/files\/2018\/04\/sonja_blossom-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>I kept checking on Sonja, and she kept on smiling.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One thing I will give the OD rides.\u00a0 The views are outstanding, breath taking, and I absolutely feel like I am on top of the world.\u00a0 It can be a little daunting to some people to be walking along a ridge a thousand feet up on the edge of a mountain and being able to look straight down the side to the bottom.\u00a0 But I love it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">.On trail, Penny Pony stopped at every water crossing and tanked up.\u00a0 I told Sonja, she has always been, from day 1, a great drinker on trail.\u00a0 She will eat, too, when there&#8217;s something other than rocks available.<\/p>\n<p>LOL<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4043\" src=\"http:\/\/newpromisefarms.com\/files\/2018\/04\/rocks-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>And rocks.\u00a0 Lots and lots of rocks.\u00a0 I did discover last year at the OD ride that Penny Pony is a rock trotting machine.\u00a0 So, I let her pick the pace through the rocks.\u00a0 A couple times I had to ask her to slow it down, but mostly she trotted when she could and she walked (all on her own) when she couldn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, little story here.\u00a0 When we started on the Blue loop.\u00a0 I kept feeling like we were going wrong.\u00a0 We passed LeeAnne and she said we were going correctly, but it felt wrong.\u00a0 Then we passed a left turn, but the pie plate said &#8220;55&#8221;.\u00a0 We did not notice the &#8220;&amp; 30&#8221; written in smaller letters at the bottom of the pie plate.\u00a0 So we kept going and now Sonja says it feels wrong.\u00a0 We only went a half mile past the turn.\u00a0 Then a half mile back to the turn so we got in an extra mile of workout.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4044\" src=\"http:\/\/newpromisefarms.com\/files\/2018\/04\/rocks2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Penny Pony was setting a mean pace, we passed a couple more riders.\u00a0 Then we passed some drag riders.\u00a0 We came out onto the downhill single track leading into the vet check and Penny Pony picked up the pace.\u00a0 Sonja was already far outside her comfort zone traveling as fast as she and Blossom were to stay with Penny Pony, so that downhill pace was too much.\u00a0 We slowed down.\u00a0 I had made her promise me before we started that if it was too much, to tell me.\u00a0 I was there for the fun, not for the win.\u00a0 She held to her promise!\u00a0 Then we picked up a new rider on a new horse.<\/p>\n<p>GREENBEANS!\u00a0 I love Greenbeans.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4046\" src=\"http:\/\/newpromisefarms.com\/files\/2018\/04\/allison_monster-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Allison was so grateful to be able to join us because her horse, fondly known as Monster, was sure he was all alone on the trail and he was never going to see another horse again.<\/p>\n<p>Cracks me up!<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">.We came out on the grassy pathway and Penny Pony kicked it up a notch.\u00a0 She knew we were heading back and I was hard pressed to keep her at a &#8220;group&#8221; pace.\u00a0 She was cantering, and her ears were forwards and she was happy happy happy. I did convince her to walk the last 1\/2 mile into the vet check.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Into the hold we go.\u00a0 Penny Pony vets in with all As and one B.\u00a0 Her CRI was a bit elevated (60\/64), but she was hot, I did not sponge her and the sun was beating on us waiting in line to vet in.\u00a0 I wasn&#8217;t concerned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I walk up the hill to the hold area and there are literally five horses in there.\u00a0 THANK GOODNESS.\u00a0 Not crowded at all.\u00a0 I looked around and there was no volunteers there to hold Penny Pony while I looked for my hold bag, and she was nose deep in a bale of hay, so I tied her to the bale of hay and went off looking for my bag. (Keep in mind, this is a horse that does NACMO and she&#8217;s used to being tied to all kinds of things while I wander off looking for my Orienteering Objective)<\/p>\n<p>I found my bag then I heard someone yelling, &#8220;Hey, can someone come hold this horse?\u00a0 Where is the rider?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some person untied Penny Pony from the bale of hay and was holding her down hill. No hay, no water.<\/p>\n<p>WTF Luigi?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I quick run over and grab her from that person. I saw Sonja and Blossom way up the hill from me and debated taking her over to be with her riding buddy, but decided since the hold wasn&#8217;t crowded, I would keep her where my bag was so I didn&#8217;t have to lug it up the hill.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I walk over to my bag and tie her in the brush, off to the side, to a small tree, throw hay in front of her, and now she is eating everything in sight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Still no volunteers to help me out so I grab a bucket I see laying on it&#8217;s side and I walk down and fill it with water.\u00a0 Now she&#8217;s drinking.<\/p>\n<p>I pull her pan and grain from the hold bag and she&#8217;s REALLY happy now!<\/p>\n<p>I sit under her and eat my peanut butter and jelly sandwich.<\/p>\n<p>Mmmmm, nice and squishy!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">30 mile riders are starting to pile into the hold now.\u00a0 It&#8217;s beginning to fill up so I throw Penny&#8217;s saddle on her and get ready to roll.\u00a0 We still have 15 minutes until we leave, but I don&#8217;t want to be saddling up when horses are milling around.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She&#8217;s eating and happy happy happy because she has discovered I put carrots in her bowl. Yes, I alctually remembered to put carrots in the hold bag.\u00a0 I almost forgot!<\/p>\n<p>Mmmmm<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Okay, now the front runner 50 mile riders are coming in and the hold is really getting crowded now. I pull Penny deeper into the brush and tie her to a different tree, away from the commotion, so I can go pee and be ready to go. I looked for a volunteer to hold her and didn&#8217;t see one.<\/p>\n<p>(We were told at the meeting there would be plenty of volunteers in this hold.\u00a0 Where are they?)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just as I am coming back from the bathroom, I hear two mares squealing at each other.\u00a0 They are right next to Penny, who is totally ignoring them while she&#8217;s finishing up her pan of food. I crawl Under her belly to get on the other side of her, away from the two mares making faces at each other and grab my helmet.\u00a0 Just as I do that I hear<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;WHACK&#8221; then some rider yelling at her horse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Penny&#8217;s head came up out of her bowl, her eyes were big as saucers then she grunted and her front legs started to crumple.\u00a0 My body was reacting before my brain understood what happened.\u00a0 I grabbed the billet straps, dropped the saddle on the ground and dragged her away from the brush and out into the open.<\/p>\n<p>She dropped like a stone to the ground and rolled on her side, groaning and quivering.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, two mares were fighting at each other and Penny Pony was the one that got kicked.<\/p>\n<p>Argh<\/p>\n<p>I hear people in the back ground yelling for the vet.<\/p>\n<p>I hear people saying colic, get her up.<\/p>\n<p>I am trying to say, :No, she was kicked and she just needs to lay here a minute\/&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But someone grabbed the reins from my hand and pulled her up.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed them back from that someone and started down the hill to see the vet.\u00a0 She is really in pain and maybe something is broken.<\/p>\n<p>The vet doesn&#8217;t think I&#8217;m walking fast enough so she grabs Penny from me and is yelling over her shoulder, &#8220;Can I give her meds?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I&#8217;m trying to say, &#8220;She got kicked.&#8221; but nothing is coming out as I&#8217;m trying to keep up with the vet&#8217;s 300 mph jog. All I can do is shake my head, &#8220;No!&#8221; and hope the vet is seeing that.<\/p>\n<p>I finally catch up to her and she&#8217;s pulling an injection and I&#8217;m like, &#8220;STOP! She got kicked.\u00a0 This is not colic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now the vet is frantic that she has internal bleeding. Dale was checking her over and found the spot where she was kicked.\u00a0 A huge hematoma, the size of a perfect horse hoof, was rising on her right side, right behind the rib cage in the soft tissue of the belly. He started a massage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Actually, by the time we got all the way down to the vet truck, Penny Pony was looking and feeling much better.\u00a0 Now she&#8217;s trying to eat the grass growing on the side of the road. Here comes Sonja and Blossom leaving on trail and I&#8217;m trying to tell her what happened, Dale is telling me to calm down because I&#8217;m getting Penny all worked up and the vet is asking me if I am going to continue the ride.<\/p>\n<p>STOP!\u00a0 Just stop.<\/p>\n<p>No, I am not taking this mare back out on trail with a huge hematoma.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, you can give her banamine.<\/p>\n<p>No, I am not leaving this hold without my saddle, and stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it is on the hill.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you Dale for walking up there to get it for me.<\/p>\n<p>Gawd.<\/p>\n<p>And I get a hot flash.<\/p>\n<p>Great.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4049\" src=\"http:\/\/newpromisefarms.com\/files\/2018\/04\/finshed-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Dale trailered us back to the base camp.\u00a0 Penny got off the trailer at the treatment vet and while he&#8217;s trying to look at her, she&#8217;s consuming everything in sight.\u00a0 He told me that best thing for her would be to take her home and let her in her pasture to keep moving.\u00a0 Better than staying in a small corral all night and possibly cramping up.<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dang.\u00a0 I wanted to do the bonfire and I even brought my banjo.\u00a0 I practiced and everything before coming because I knew there was going to be a bonfire.<\/p>\n<p>Oh well.\u00a0 Treatment vet said she&#8217;d be fine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4050\" src=\"http:\/\/newpromisefarms.com\/files\/2018\/04\/finished1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>She ate and drank everything I put in front of her. So after waiting two hours to be sure nothing was bad wrong, we packed up and left No Frills.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is her 1- minutes before loading up to come home.\u00a0 She doesn&#8217;t even look like she did 23 + 1 miles of tough mountain climbing through rocks, let alone got kicked and had a huge hematoma pop up.<\/p>\n<p>She is awesome.<\/p>\n<p>No Frills is a No Go for me in the future.\u00a0 This ride slays me. Uhm, yeah&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Penny is fine!
